I play 5 string for a few reasons. I first started playing a 5 around 1995 and I thought basses with more strings were cooler. Obviously I was listening to a lot of Primus then. Eventually I started to rely heavily on the low B string. You have a wider range of notes in one position so you don't have to jump up and down the neck as much.
With Taking Back Sunday we had a few songs tuned to drop D. I didn't feel like re-tuning my bass for those songs so a 5 string came in handy. On some of the heavier songs I felt dropping the octave could kind of fatten up, or emphasize certain parts.
In Straylight with a lot of the piano stuff, I like to be able to sort of double whatever John or Michelle are playing with their left hand. Having the depth of the low B string is great for that.
Ant, if you are looking to expand your tone you should look into investing in a Sans Amp Bass Driver. It's basically this little glorified stomp box that can act as your DI as well. It's extremely versatile, and any sound guy at any club will thank you for using it. I use it live, and when I'm recording at home. Another plus is that it's relatively inexpensive, usually priced under $200. You may be able to find one used for way less.
Hope this helped you out a little. Thanks for writing.

Thought I'd chip in on the original who here plays bass part. I've been playing for a couple years now but only recently have gotten into playing off the root and doing countermelodies and such. I want a 5-string bad but I think I need to get a better amp first. Anyone try using a 5-string amp on an older 4-string amp? Does the low-B come through as well?

As Ant said before, if you are playing through a proper bass amp, and not a guitar amp, it should definitely be able to handle a low B. Hell, bass amps can handle a full range keyboard with ease and they go well below low b.
I've never have used any Orange bass stuff, and haven't talked to anyone who has used them. I don't know much about them other than they make killer guitar heads and cabs.
I only use Ampeg, and from experience I say they are nearly always reliable and sound very good.

Hey Antlikescheese thanks for the recomendation with Orange. I haven't seen any Orange amps around here but when I head to Portland to watch MCR I'll check that. Didn't Weezers first bassist use an Orange head? I've had poor luck plugging amps into PA's so hopefully the crush will satisfy. I've got a total of 7 pedals. Only three of them are strictly bass. But I find if you're using any effects a Boss Noise Reducer is handy, especially if you're playing live. My bass amp sucks so I had to buy a compressor but I figure yours already has one. Bass Wah's by Crybaby are nice if you use them really subtitly and not just wah wah wah on them unless you're playing some really progressive stuff. But yeah if you get a Sans Amp DI(which is also on my wishlist) a Noise Reducer and Delay would probably go along sweet. I have a Boss bass synth pedal but I haven't found enough use for it to recommend it. Although the new one that's out has an output for a wah-pedal that would be better than just setting the wah filters. But yeah hope that helps out.

Oh yeah and if you have alot of pedals, or two amps Boss Line selectors are pretty sweet too. But yeah I already have a 40 watt bass amp so I don't think the Crush amps are really what I'm looking for. Especially considering it looks like I'd have a 5 or so hour drive just to try one out. I think I may look into one of the Rockverb bass heads though. Can anyone recommend a nice 4x10 cabinet?

if i can actually get my band together to do anything. which never seems to happen and we start doing gigs i might save up fro an orange head and a cab. ive also been asked to join me m8s band but i they won't let me influence my stuff into it and they wnat to do dido covers So i think i might quit but ill see what i can do because one of the guitarists likes some heavier stuff like me. im also pissed off with my bro coz he always calls me an emo kid for no reason just coz i listen to some emo and they are like don't cry about it. So the onyl way i can get back at them is dissing their funk music hmmm lol. anyways oh yeh has anybody got a the format or hot snakes album that they think is worth getting thanks ant:)likescheese oh yeah is it true that on american tv all they say about the tsunami is that they are worried about some american army base. if thats true then that is just stupid

just saying hi to the other bassists out there - good to know i'm not alone I actually came to this part of the message board because I saw the LAUNCH video and noticed Shaun was playing a 5 string. So thanks for starting up this thread, b/c there he is explaining why! I've always thought about using a 5 string myself, but can't really justify buying one until my band starts playing the kind of shows you get paid for oh and hey, antlikescheese, some of my favourite bass lines include Longview by Greenday, Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades by Brand New, There's No 'I' In Team by Taking Back Sunday... oh, and I Will Survive, by Cake. Give those songs a listen (i'm sure you've heard some before) and see if you like any - if you need a tab, let me know! peace
