yes, among other things
this santas secret is just some self-maintaining business he has. he used to make them himself (and i'd help sometimes), but moved manufacturing to another part of the world more than a few years ago cuz he gets a lot of orders.
i almost went on QVC for his product's second (or third?) time on there back in 2004... but he had a cousin do it instead since he already lives near QVC and is a meteorologist

haha...
alright so here's what i remember happening:
back in early 1998 he had the idea/concept for the non-electrical, non-mechanical christmas tree waterer like you see on that site, except NO BOOTS.
we were at a grocery store one day, and my dad sees these plain ol' boots (like on the site) with no lid, no faux fur trim, etc. it was originally made to just like, stick christmas candy in or whatever you wanted..
so we see this in the christmas section of the grocery store and my dad suddenly says "i'm gonna make this the new waterer" and i'm like "sayyyy what!!?" i didn't quite envision what he meant at the time
so thennnn... my dad contacted the company who made these naked boot things, and they agreed to sell him lots of these boots so he could modify them into the tree waterers you see today. after my dad's first success with qvc, the company even made a special version for my dad with like a bigger opening at the top to fit the white lids (that you pour the water through) easier and more efficiently

oh but as for the original idea... i think my dad...
ummm
just likes to invent stuff.
i'm not exactly sure how he discovered and decided to go after this market
he was probably just looking for a way out of Intel and the corporate world.

i feel stupid because i still dont understand what the product does/is and i even read and watched the video on how to use it -carla I think what it does is that you hook the boots up to the base of the tree, and fill them with water. Over the next ten days it will send the water to keep the tree hydrated or whatever you want to call it. After ten days though, the boots are empty, so you have to refill it. So I assume the purpose of the product is to keep the hassle from having to water your Christmas Tree every day, as well as use it for a cute decoration for under the tree. But I've never had a real Christmas tree, so I'm not if that makes any sense, just what I got out of the animation.
