Coming to you on this first day of the winter solstice, from my modest abode on wonderfully/frighteningly temperate Long Island.
The holiday season is upon us, the end of the year is closing in, and all is well here in Straylight land! We had a terrific time on our last tour with Matt Pond PA, Kevin Devine, and Street To Nowhere. We got to watch great bands every night and made several new friends along the way. What more could we ask for?! Mad props to all those bands for making the trek with us, and even madder props to all of you who came out to the shows. Many drove ridiculous distances (ie New Orleans to Houston!)and/or came to multiple shows. We cannot thank you enough for your enthusiasm and dedication.
As for our upcoming record, not much to announce. We still need to clean up some of the mixes, but this won't happen until after the New Year. The record label hunt should hopefully be over in January as well. As soon as we've crossed our eyes, and dotted our plain white t's we will let you know. Rest assured, things are looking great.
I'm bored so I figured I'd get into some end of year/ pop culture stuff for fun and self indulgence. For some ego maniacal reason I think this sort of thing may appeal to some of you. If this doesn't interest you, feel free to explore the vast recesses of this infinite Internet; I am through with band updates anyway.
Here are some albums I really liked in 2006. These aren't in any order since I don't like playing favorites, I don't like hurting people's feelings (if Justin Timberlake saw his record lower on my list than say, The Format record, JT may have his mother call me up to scold me for such an idiotic indiscretion), and it also takes way too much thought and self debate.
Bouncing Souls – The Gold Record: One of my all time favorite punk bands put out their best record (IMHO) since Maniacal Laughter
The Hold Steady – Boys and Girls in America: These songs could be the score to my life.
The Format – Dog Problems: phenomenal experimental record. This band continues to blow me away.
Brand New – The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me: Balls to the wall rock record. "Jesus" could be the best song this great band has ever written.
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade: I wasn't expecting to like this record since the single didn't really grab me. After one listen through the album I am hooked. That first song is effin killer! These guys deserve every bit of success they have
Justin Timberlake – FutureSex/LoveSounds: He made "bringin' sexy back" a household phrase. Hell, my mom even uses it and so does yours! I truly believe JT is our generation's Frank Sinatra (sans probable mob ties). He can sing, dance, act, and is one likable, charismatic fellow!
Thom Yorke – The Eraser: Thom Yorke is brilliant.
Kevin Devine – Put Your Ghost to Rest: Kevin is a rare talent. I cannot wait until the rest of the world catches on.
The Lawrence Arms – Oh! Calcutta!: Great punk record that has gotten more play on long drives in the van than probably anything else in my mp3 player (I loath the ipod).
The Loved Ones – Keep Your Heart: What can I say, it was a good year for punk rock! Up and coming band with tons of hooks.
Sean Lennon – Friendly Fire: Trying to get out of the shadow of your Beatle father must be rough. I think this record could do it for Sean. He has certainly come into his own.
Check out John's top 10 of 2006 here!
Movies and TV:
I don't get to watch much TV on the road, but thanks to Tivo I can catch up when I get home. My favorites are The Office, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and The Ultimate Fighter. Speaking of UFC, anyone else psyched about Liddell Ortiz II? I know I am!
Saw a bunch of movies this year, but the three that stood out most were The Departed (Scorsese is still phenomenal), Borat (could Sacha Baron Cohen our generation's Andy Kaufman?), and Rocky Balboa (I saw it today and loved every minute, I am a Rocky GEEK!).
Ok, so that is it! 2006 has been a good year for us, but I'm hoping that 2007 will find us VERY busy. We hope everyone has a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season. Remember Straylight Run loves you! Be good, we can't wait to see you in the New Year.
Your faithful messenger,
Shaun"
Welp I guess that might be the answer to the will they actually have a label question...
I'm pysched for next year .
