Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater is probably the best, if not one of the best on earth, he is up there with neil, i mean rush is such a well developed and experienced band and i love them, but mike portnoys style and techniques blow me away, if you check out my post on what kind of kits do you guys use, ive been drumming for 7 years, and im 16 now and i think i have quite a bit of experience, and neil pert is one of my biggest isperations next to mike portnoy, check it out, and tell me what you think of mike portnoy...not to start an arguement, but like to broaden your horizons, there are other people out there ;D

better?
i'm not sure about that
mike portnoy and neil pert are both very skilled drummer, but their playing doesnt really appeal to me, therefor i have trouble using them as inspiration or influence. dream theatre is actually an example i often use, because they are probably the most talented band that i have no interest in listening to. the ramones and nirvana had about 1/100 of the technical ability that rush or dream theatre have but they wrote and performed songs that i think are amazing, albeit simple. i do value skill and imagination and actually listen to some "good" drummers like tim alexander and stuart copeland, but portnoy and pert just don't do it for me.

Everyone hast here own opinions on who the "best" drummer is. . .fact of the matter is that there isn't one decisive person out there. . .With Neil and Rush. . .there music is so technical, drawn out, almost movie like that ofcourse you have to admire the amazing skills he has. . .BUT you also have to look at great drummers such as Keith Moon from The Who. . .ya he wasn't doing anything "amazing" but the guy put on a show for the crowd. He's the type of eccentric and extraverted drummer that makes a person want to be a drummer for a living, or atleast go see the band live. With that said, you also have to give respect to John Bonham from Zepplin - the music was a mix of blues/rock/metal/folk and everything else under the sun. . .you have to respect a drummer that can mix different genres together to make beautiful music. . .just trying to spice up this post -Kurt
