Hey.
I can play a few instruments already and have always wanted to add drums to the list of ones I can play. I can already play some simple beats but I'd like to stretch my knowledge further.
I've taught myself Guitar and Piano and I was planning on teaching myself drums also, but is it considered a difficult process? I'm up for a challenge sure, I'm just wondering if it would be wiser to get lessons or not?
If you have taught yourself, what would you recommend I start off doing? I don't have constant access to a kit right now, just the one at school but I was thinking if I started to get better I could save some money up. Any recommendations for a starter kit?
Cheers, Will.

well... first of all, good luck. i'm mostly self taught, and i can say for sure that if you are serious about it and dedicated lessons will help tremendously. unfortunately i've only recently found the discipline and focus to really benefit from instruction. basically the choice is all yours. its possible to learn to play very well without any guidance, but its also possible that lessons will help a great deal. regardless of what you do, your first step should be a pair of sticks and a practice pad. shouldn't cost more than 25-30 pounds. (uk is so expensive). and it will be vital for you to practice inbetween your time spent on an actual drum kit. even those of us that do have regular access to a drumkit should be hitting the practice pad daily. learn rudiments. practice them. start with simple things like single strokes, double strokes, para diddles, and some other simple L/R patterns. all the info you'll need for the beginning of your drumming exploration can be easily found on the interweb. www.vicfirth.com has some great instructional videos. and there are all sites of websites, forums, and hell i even saw a myspace group for drummers where someone posted video links. its a vast resource and its free, so find some rudiments/lessons and then hit the pad. as for a starter kit, there are tons of options. we discussed it a little bit on this page. but some kits that get great reviews are the DW/pacifics, ludwig accent-custom, some mapex lines, gretsch catalina, and then there's always the option of getting a used kit. which i usually recommend. sucks that you live in the uk though, everything is so expensive over there. i think that's everything. good luck with it -will
