Hey Will,
I just started playing the drums a few months ago. My money is pretty tight right now so I've been playing on a friend's set. I'm starting to look around for my own but I want a professional's opinion. Do you have any suggestions for a good company or a reliable store? If you have the time, it would help a lot.
Thanks so much, Amanda

hey amanda,
its great to hear that you are joining the drum world. there are plenty of great drum kits available nowadays. and especially some entry level type kits.
the cheapest way to buy a drumset is to go used. it always has been and probably always will be.
with something like a Pacific maple kit, you get all maple shells, decent bearing edges, nice finishes and pretty good hardware. they are pretty affordable drums that are good quality. getting a kit like this used might run you the same price as a really low end beginner drum set.
the best way to do it is to play as many kits as you can. play a friends, ask question. go to a store play them, check out the hardware, check prices and options, etc.
as for reliable companies. everyone has there own opinions. Pacific (made by dw) kits are really popular for being well made kits that are affordable. but if you really want to get the cheapest kit you can find you'll probably have to look at some smaller company, ones that i'm not all that familar with. or buy used.
as for stores, typically guitar center or sam ash is going to have the lowest prices and decent selection. but its always nice to buy from a local independent drum shop/music store.
good luck -will

will
thank you so much for your reply. I just bought a kit from a friends cousin. It's kind of crappy but that's what I expected. Again, thanks so much.

i played a double pedal back in '96 or so... that lasted about a year or two. i FAR from mastered it, i would say lackluster at the very best. i wasn't listen to much music with double bass in it, nor was i playing much music with it... so i moved on.
i'm pretty happy with the feel and capabilities of using a single kick drum.

Double bass pedals are overrated seems like everyone who takes it up has only got that in mind....it would be muhc more apt in mastering the use of a calve block or cowbell on your left foot....it gains independence and theres alot more versatillity in the styles it can be played with.....if you work with it then a double bass drum should be easily conquered afterwards, rather than vice versa. ;D
