i was wondering what your thoughts on acrylic shells are...
i've been thinking about going with them for my next set. my buddy has a vintage ludwig vistalite set. it's pretty damn nice and i like the way they sound, but they are a little high pitched for my taste... would that be his tuning, or are the acrylics just higher pitched than the woods i'm used to?

i've only spent a short amount of time with one vistalite kit. it was a 13/16/22 and i definitely didnt think the toms were high pitched. i've heard that since acrylic shells are more reflective than wood shells, they tend to be more effected by changes in heads (and i can only assume tunings) than a wood shell. you might not get the same warm resonance as you would from thin maple shell, but i think with heavy 2 ply heads tuned low, vistalites would definitely have a low pitched thump to them.
if your serious about hunting down a vintage vistalite (or even a reissue or newer custom acrylic drums) i'd suggest seeing if your buddy would mind if you spend a little time tuning and playing his kit... see what kind of range the drums have.
even if they don't sound exactly how you want... they look DAMN cool! -will
