I am not a drummer, but someone whose opinion I normally respect tried to convince me of something that my common sense could not wrap itself around the other day. So here it is for you drummers out there:
Do skins with varying levels of durability exist? If so, what is the difference between a cheap and super-durable skin? Are various materials used? Different thicknesses?
Common sense dictates that there must be a difference in strength/durability between skins, based on the wide variety of synthetics out there. Maybe different materials make for different tone, but there must!
Or not? Someone helpe me out!

well i'll semi answer your question. or more than one...
there are many different types of skins.
there are thinner/thicker. example - remo diplomat skins are like 7.5 mil (i dont know what unit of measurement a "mil" is though..definitely not a millimeter). then they have an ambassador which is 10 mil. then they have a "control sound" which is a 10mil skin with a second layer "dot" attached to the center of the skin, where the drum stick would mostly hit.
then most companies have a few different types of heads for marching drums, which tend to be even more durable and tend to focus on volume and projection. sometimes these heads are made with kevlar.
they also have immitation calf/animal skin heads that attempt to replicate the tone/feel of old style calf skin heads.
hope that answers some questions.
check out evansdrumheads.com or remo.com for more info.

Thank-you for your answers Will... I'm beginning to think that common sense has phenomenal accuracy when it comes to physics problems.

one of my buddies has an aquarian head made with kevlar... that thing is insane. i could most likely bash it with a bat and not harm it at all
