Hey hey.. I am just getting to the point in my music listening where if I pay attention I can sort of pick out keys and time signatures and the lot.. One song I was wondering about is From Start To Finish. I hear 3/4, but there are a lot of quick beats here and there that make me wonder if it's written in 6/8 to allow for more room. If I'm way off the mark, that would be cool too ;D
Thank-you!

time signatures are interesting. since a time signature is just a way of grouping or organizing musical notation, which is a translation of music as sound to music as a written language... its not something... real. to me anyway. sound is the only reality in music. the rest is translation. so in my eyes 3/4 and 6/8 time aren't all that different. this is completely different in comparison to what a composer might think. or a semi-talented musician even. but to me, its all a matter of what makes sense and feels right, whether you're counting 123456, or 1*2*3*.
as for "from start to finish" i have no clue what song that is.

I tend to agree with your description of sound as the key element of music.. that's pretty hard to deny. and yeah, the difference between 3/4 and 6/8 would only be in the actual composition, but somehow, the feel of a song kind of guides me as to what time signature I think a song is in.. if there is a clear 1, 2, 3 with no off-beat hits, I go 3/4, and yeah. However, more importantly... From Start To Finish is a song that I seem to have entirely misattributed a song to Straylight Run that, as Google would tell me, is actually by a band called The Starting Line. I was going based on vocals that sounded something like John's and just figured the raw, moderately whinier, and slightly less awesome sound was due to the fact I had an mp3 of a demo or somesuch non-album song. If you ever end up hearing that song and not liking it, forgive me, but I like it enough to have mistakenly attributed it to such a fine group as Straylight Run, so I hope I haven't insulted you by this. My apologies!

have you ever heard of math rock?(i.e the mars volta) where every instrument is on a different time signature from each other, but they seem to match it up in some odd way.
