hi will, I will be ordering a c&c kit in a few days and i am going for an old wood look for the kit. I had a few questions. First are claw style wood hoops hard to tune?I noticed you have them on your black cat set. Did it mess with the sound a lot or in a negative way? The second question i had was about pearl boom stands. I love the look of the old ones much like the ones you have but all I've been able to find are the newer models. I wanna stay vintage, I'm not a fan of dw stands.Where would i find them? Please respond if you can.thanks.

hey nick,
the claw style wood hoops are AMAZING, i love the sound of them combined with the super thin 6ply toms on my black cat toms. and i dont think they hurt the tuning process that much if any. i actually lent those toms to a producer named matt squire (he did panic at the disco and cute is what we aim for) and he said it was the best tom sound he's ever gotten. if you want lots of low end warmth, i think wood hoops, 6ply, and a stain is the way to go. for more volume and projection you could add steel hoops (or even die cast hoops) and 8 ply toms. if you go 8 ply i think a wrap or stain would be fine either way.
my old pearl stands are falling apart, i've been touring with them seriously for almost 10 years. i had to replace one already, i replaced it with a very cheap pacific stand and it has been working out great, even with a heavier 20" crash boomed out.
i'm sure you could find the old pearl stands on ebay if you look around enough. but they are just ok in my opinion. better off getting something newer and more reliable.
good luck with it. talk to bill from C&C for a minute. he's a vintage guy at heart so he'll understand where you are coming from. (side note, i thought keller's new mahogany shells were too dead for my tastes,...i was excited about them but man, they were DEAD)
