I was wondering what styles every plays in here (including you, Will. Obviously you play with SR, but what other styles do you play in your free time). I'm a jazz guy myself, though a good funk or r&b. I play a lot of linear drumming. I was just wondering. Cheers

i've been playing in fairly similar music styled bands for the past few years (long distance runner, breaking pangaea, straylight). its always revolving around rock, but i think i typically bring something slightly interesting and new to the table, even if its just a spoonful. when i sit down at a kit i typically end up playing things that would fall into a funk realm or maybe almost prog(?). recently i've been having fun listening to more electronic/hip hop stuff and playing along with it. either following the beats or doing some sort of counter rhythm.

I think that is a great idea. I think that drummers too often put pressure on themselves to be innovative, or mind blowing at every gig, or even maybe on every song. We all hope for that one lick, you know?, like Gadd on "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." But, there is something to be said for the freedom found in music already written out, or more eltronic/hip hop, where everything is kind of preordained, and there isn't much room for anything else other than just keeping the beat. Not only can it teach steady rythm and tempo control, but it teaches discipline (something I still struggle with). In fact, regarding the 'Everyday' album (what I consider to be DMB's worst album), Beauford did comment on how freeing it was that all of the music was written out for him already, and I have to agree with him. Although, like Papa Joe Jones said, "99.9% of the time is theirs. But, the .01%, that's mine!" Also, I completely empathize with playing funk at the kit. With funk it is so easy to just get into the pocket and sit there all day. I've talked too much already. Cheers

Also, I like drumming in the Brittish rock styles (Oasis, The Verve, etc.) laying 4 heavy beats on the floor, eighth notes on a slightly open and dry hi-hat with emphasis on the downbeats, hard dry tight snare on two and four. I don't know why, but sometimes that simple little beat is a great time.
