...and hence a very ordinary question:
Shaun, what's your take on Flea? I hope this hasn't been asked before (as it seems like an obvious one for any bass player) but I just thought I'd ask. Is he someone you revere/respect/revile/other-"r"-word? I for one am a huge fan - I actually picked up the greatest hits tab book and am about 2/3 of my way through learning it (which makes me happy like nothing in the world!!)
edit: sweet - Gretzky post! go hockey!

Although I'm not into RHCP anymore (Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magic were my era), I have a tremendous respect for Flea both as a musician and a bass player. Whether he's slapping and popping like a mad man, or playing sweet finger style grooves he is always very tasteful in everything he plays. His stuff on the Mars Volta's De-Loused in the Comatorium is ridiculously amazing. Oh it also doesn't hurt that he's a kick ass trumpet player too!!!

I agree wholeheartedly when you say that he is tasteful in everything he plays.. I was playing "Breaking the Girl" a couple days after my original post and couldn't help but thinking Flea was a) the only person who would write a neat little part like he did to an otherwise acoustic song, and b) that he was also the only one who would be able to actually add to the song with it instead of cluttering it up... Another example is Soul to Squeeze (my favourite bassline of the moment), in which the bass is so conscious of the drumming in the song.. for example, while he does add the octave at the end of the verse bassline, he'll also hold off on it at just perfect times to let the drum beat come through..
I guess you'd have to know the songs pretty well to know what I'm talking about from my crappy description, but you probably do, so it's all good!
PS - I have lost one of the tiny screws attached to the piece (saddle?) that holds the strings level at the base of the.. um.. bass. The local music stores tell me that these screws are quite rare (and metric, I might add) - is this true? will I need to write to the manufacturer for a tiny little screw? If I've failed in description of the piece, it is cylindrical in shape, there's one for each string, and there's a groove in it that holds the string level. I assume if I were to want to raise or lower my strings I would adjust it. Rambling aside, do you have any advice?

Yeah, he's great.. I didn't even know that Flea played trumpet until I started looking up biographies of his on the net... And only since then I've started paying more attention to the trumpet when it shows up in RHCP songs.. I wonder what percentage of average music listeners know this?
Time to borrow the Mars Volta CD and listen to the bass...

I would say once you learn any musical instrument, you'll have a head start on the next one you start.. IMO it's probably easier to go from electric guitar to bass guitar because you need a lot more finger dexterity (ie chords) with an electric just to not suck.. whereas with bass you don't use chords and the strings are further apart from each other, allowing a little more room for error...

At what point did they get a new bassist? I'm not Incubus' biggest fan in the world but the two things I loved about them were their acoustic songs and their basslines (battlestar in particular!). PS - yea, so I replied almost half a year late. I am THAT awesome. *cough*
