hey shaun, i have been playing bass for a year and a half, and am planning to get a new bass soon, i have been interested in the Line6 variax 700(im a four string kinda guy) 24 bass models sounds pretty sweet to me, any comments on that brand of bass, it would be nice to hear your views on it and/ or suggestions for a nice second bass, and flat wound or round wound strings? why? keep playing bass the way you do, me and your fellow fans love it.

Hey Nathan, way to pick this forum back up! This is the first new post just a couple months short of a year!
Anyway, I checked out the Line6 Variax and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It has been my experience that these type of gimmicks never really work out properly. I have used the Bass Pod before, and I think it's OK. I feel like it kind of emulates the sound of may different amplifiers, but isn't really true to those sounds. I also feel that sort of half assed diversity is really unnecessary. I feel like this bass will probably be more of the same.
Just by changing how you EQ your amp, or changing your type of strings can accomplish a lot and is way less expensive.
If I were to recomend a bass, and it's diversity you're looking for I'd go for a Fender Jazz with the active "noiseless" pickups. Our studio engineer Bryan loves the way my American Jazz Deluxe V sounds and is always raving about it. I really think it is due to those pickups. The neck of a jazz bass is nice and thin too, so with proper setup they play very easily.
As for the strings you should use, I'd go with round wounds. Unless you only want a old fashioned plunky kind of tone there isn't really a need for flat wounds. Flat wounds are rather limiting that way. I used flat wounds on record, but when we play live, I just stick to round wounds.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
